“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please” Galatians 5:16-17.
It is a common sight these days to see people walking while intently focused on their smartphones. It is something of a miracle that more people are not hit in traffic, or fall perilously. Walking attentively is obviously not a priority.
To walk by the Spirit requires attentiveness and intention. It would be an unwise hiker who chooses to head off into an unfamiliar forest without a map or GPS. There is wisdom in knowing where one is going, and being attentive to potential pitfalls and dangers along the way.
Walking the way of the Spirit is described in the verses that follow in Galatians 5 (verses 22-23). The qualities listed serve as important signposts, whereas the preceding verses describing the deeds of the flesh (verses 19-21) serve as warning signs. In both cases, these verses prompt us to watch our walk.
Individuals walking almost unaware in public while focused on their smartphones serve as illustrations as to how we may be walking by the Spirit. We may have a desire to walk by the Spirit, but worldly cares and attractions easily draw us similarly to focusing on a smartphone. As such, we may wander from the way of the Spirit and not even be aware of the danger.
The inner Holy Spirit prompts important actions to guide us in our Spirit walk. If we are to stay in step with the Spirit, we will follow the prompting toward daily Bible reading and study, focused prayer, helpful interaction with other like-minded believers, and a desire to share the gospel with those who have not accepted it.
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit” Galatians 5:25.
